At the same time that Man-Thing appeared in Marvel Comics in 1971, DC Comics introduced Swamp Thing in a short story included in the House of Secrets header. The character was created by scriptwriter Len Wein and penciled by legendary cartoonist Berni Wrightson. The short story was a success and enthusiastic readers asked for more comics about the character. The following year Swamp Thing already had his own series.
