Modesty Blaise y Axa: National Comic Book Day - Romero

There are comic book characters that transcend the pages in which they were created… Axa and Modesty Blaise are two magnificent examples of this, and two of the most recognizable works in the extraordinary legacy of Enric Badia Romero.

AXA

Axa is a newspaper comic strip created by artist Enric Badia Romero, with scripts by Donne Avenell. Published in the British newspaper The Sun between 1978 and 1985, the series chronicled the adventures of a strong, sensual, independent, and empowered woman in a post-apocalyptic world. Axa achieved enormous popularity and was published in numerous countries. Romero’s graphic talent transformed each strip into a small work of art, in which drawing, composition, and, above all, his mastery of the female form take on an exceptional prominence.

The original Axa newspaper strips are true gems of the ninth art. And few things allow us to appreciate their value better than seeing one of these original pages up close: holding the original in your hands is a chance to discover, at close range, the magic and artistry that Romero brought to his work.

MODESTY BLAISE

In the early 1960s, the London newspaper Evening Standard commissioned writer Peter O’Donnell to create a newspaper comic strip inspired by the world of secret agents, following in the footsteps of characters such as James Bond, who enjoyed enormous popularity at the time.

Thus was born Modesty Blaise, one of the great adventure series of the British press and, undoubtedly, the work that would bring Enric Badia Romero his greatest international recognition.

Romero began drawing Modesty Blaise in 1970, when the Evening Standard asked him to temporarily replace Jim Holdaway, the series’ regular artist, who had fallen ill. Following Holdaway’s untimely death, Romero continued to develop the series, leaving an unmistakable artistic mark on it.

Its protagonist, Modesty Blaise, is an extraordinary woman: a spy, an adventurer, and, on occasion, even a smuggler. A complex, independent, and multifaceted character who broke with many of the female archetypes of her time and who, decades later, continues to retain all her strength and appeal.

September 25 is celebrated in the United States and elsewhere around the world as National Comic Book Day, a date dedicated to honoring the art of comics and its history.
