“My dream, and that of a few others, was, and still is, to draw comics, to tell stories with drawings that would make the world better, or at the very least, more enjoyable and freer.” – Pedro Espinosa
Pedro Espinosa is a draftsman, illustrator, and caricaturist. A multidisciplinary artist who masters pencil, pen and ink, watercolor, gouache, ink… Any of these materials becomes art in his hands.
In the ’80s and ’90s, his works graced the iconic pages of Comix Internacional, Cimoc, 1984, Cairo, Más Madera, and El Jueves. His stage as an illustrator could be followed in newspapers like La Vanguardia, Avui, or Diari de Barcelona, where he also contributed a series of delicate and successful caricatures of famous figures from all walks of life.
Loco stands out as his most avant-garde work, depicting the adventures of a mime where Espinosa skillfully plays with comic techniques with minimal words. His subsequent highly personal work was El Gulipago, delving into the exploration of the unusual. He also collaborated on collective comic books like BCN Noire for Norma Editorial. In 2022, he breathed graphic life into the story of Saint Francis of Assisi with a script by Raule.
Pedro Espinosa is also a master of sketching, which involves drawing what surrounds you in a sketchbook. His book Mi Barcelona: La ciudad de los sueños serves as evidence of this, capturing various scenes of the city of Barcelona. It’s a true demonstration of his mastery in depicting a humane Barcelona, where beyond the local or specific place, there are people living and enjoying it.
In recent times, he has created a beautiful series of illustrations titled CONfusiones, paying tribute to comic book characters by blending them with famous paintings. He has also crafted a kind of summertime memoir in the form of a comic titled Diario del Dibujante Sudoroso (2023).
