Joan Mundet
Mundet is a craftsman of the comic strip, with precise strokes, and his drawings convey with elegance whatever he sets out to achieve, immersing us in the action without undue embellishment. Indeed, if you take a moment to examine his original pages and drawings, they are truly spectacular. You can appreciate the strength of his inks if you get your hands on one of them!
Mundet is a scriptwriter, illustrator, painter, and ceramist. His comic career took off in 1974 when his early works appeared in magazines such as Trinca, Kirk, and horror publications like Pánico. His first lengthy work, Gari Folch, was serialized in the Rambla magazine in 1983, which depicted the autobiographical details of a comic artist’s life. Starting in 2000, he dedicated his craft to the famous character, El Capitán Alatriste, penned by Arturo Pérez Reverte, illustrating his novels and adapting the first two into comics. In 2010, he won the Catalonia National Comic Award for Mil vidas, alongside scriptwriter Pepe Gálvez and illustrator Alfonso López, which revisited the historical memory of the communist politician Miguel Núñez. In 2011, he took on another famous character, this time from Italian comics, Dago, written by Robin Wood, and dedicated three years to it.
Mundet also excels in youth illustration, as seen in his comics published in magazines like Cavall Fort and textbooks. He has crafted deeply personal comics such as Best Seller and Looking for Nobody. Since 2016, he has been working on Capablanca, an expansive work spanning over 400 pages that recounts the adventures of Joan Muntada in rural Catalonia of the 1600s, filled with bandits, intrigue, betrayals, duels, and swords. During the lockdown, he created the comic Bajo el cielo de acero, featuring over 180 pages of pure twilight western.
