October Halloween – Basket Case / Rafael Cortiella

Basket Case (1982), is an American cult film, written and directed by Frank Henenlotter, which blends horror and comedy in an irreverent way.

Duane Bradley arrives in New York carrying a mysterious basket in which he hides his deformed conjoined twin brother, Belial. The two were separated when they were young, and Belial was abandoned in a garbage bin after being presumed dead. Now reunited, they set out to find the doctors who operated on him…

The film was such a success that it spawned two sequels, largely driven by the rise of home video, which turned Basket Case into a must-have title on the shelves of video rental stores.

In Spain, its home-video release in the 1980s was accompanied by a new poster for the video cover, created by artist Rafael Cortiella. For his work on movie covers, Rafael Cortiella signed his artwork under the name “Joan.”

At Origin of Comics, you can find the original artwork for Basket Case, created for its Spanish video release. A large-format original illustration and a truly unique collector’s piece.
